What Is an Austrian Motorway Vignette?

Austria operates a vignette-based motorway toll system for most of its high-speed road network. Unlike point-to-point tolls, the vignette is a time-based permit that allows unrestricted travel on the majority of Austrian motorways (Autobahnen) and expressways (Schnellstraßen) during the validity period.

The system is administered by ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft), the state-owned company responsible for Austria's motorway infrastructure. All revenue from vignette sales is reinvested into road maintenance, safety improvements, and new construction.

Failure to display a valid vignette — or to have a valid digital vignette registered — when using a toll road results in a significant on-the-spot fine, typically starting at €120 for passenger vehicles. This guide provides everything you need to ensure compliance and travel with confidence.

The vignette requirement applies to vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes maximum permissible weight. Heavier vehicles are subject to the separate GO-Maut distance-based toll system and do not use vignettes.
